Plan could help solve affordable housing crunch, Ric McIver says

They may be disappearing from the landscape, but increasing the number of mobile home parks may help solve the affordable housing crunch in the city, says Ald. Ric McIver.

McIver said he will put a motion before council asking the city to find and ear-mark land for mobile home parks, with the hope new parks will help house mobile home owners who have been, or will be, pushed out of their current locations in order to make room for land redevelopment.

Increasing the number of spots for mobile homes throughout the city will help put a dent in the high demand for affordable housing in Calgary, he said.

“Affordable housing is becoming a bigger and bigger problem and I see mobile homes as one small part of the solution,” said McIver.

“This is not a cure-all for the problem of affordable housing but I think it can be part of a much bigger answer.

“I think that if we’re going to come up with a solution, we better get working right now.”

Residents at the Blackfoot mobile home park were recently given six months to vacate the premises because the land where it currently sits is scheduled to be redeveloped.

Hundreds of residents were also evicted from a mobile home park in Cochrane last year.

“In the Blackfoot park, it looks like there may be a bunch of mobile home owners who are going to have a home with no place to put it and that will just add to the affordable housing situation, unless we can find a solution,” said McIver.
